I think it looks brilliant. A bit more faithful to the original than the hideous 2nd-gen was, and it looks fantastic with these hubcap wheels. It's so throwback.

If you don't need back doors, I'd say it's a better choice than a Golf 3dr. I love them.

A girl who I help with bio gives me a ride home in hers about 3 times a week.
It's very comfy, and I think it's a cool car!

A friend of mine has a 2nd-gen "New Beetle" and I've ridden in it. She floored it and I looked over and said "...that's it?" Engine is stupidly loud in the cabin, everything is super fragile, various plastic bits have broken off all over the place, and it has the ground clearance of a Galapagos tortoise, and probably the same acceleration.
That said, I'd love to drive the new one to see how it stacks up.

I don't think I'd take one over a Golf or, specially, a Scirocco, but, yeah, I love them. They're brilliant little buggers.

Agreed on all accounts. I probably wouldn't own a convertible, as those just aren't my thing and they're robber magnets in Brazil, but I'd totally rock a hardtop.

I like it, definitely more male-friendly than the previous generation.

I love the look.. I just cannot bring myself to saying that I drive a Beetle since the first thing that everyone thinks of is the New Beetle
I cannot do that.. .I'd love a TDI convertible!

I want one RR and aircooled, or not at all.
Really, they appeal to me zero as something that looks like a beetle, but lost all the stuff that made the original interesting.

I tell people I drive a Beetle and they just give me that "oh, uhhh, nice car...." look. I then tell them it's not a new Beetle and is actually this. They just shit their pants every time.

Fat and engine should be in the back. The car just isn't interesting to me.

Watch the latest episode of Top Gear. FWD/Front-Engine can be fun, too.

Honestly, if we're talking purely from a design standpoint, I like both the second and third generation cars. The thing is, i hate just about everything else about them.

I did and it was awesome, and I would most likely buy a Fiesta ST or GTI before this. What makes the Beetle appealing to me is the rear mounted rwd setup. I don't have a problem with FWD, this car has just lost a bit of identity.

Fair point. Unfortunately I can't see VW ever going back. I guess if you want a Beetle with the engine in the back you buy a Porsche 911.

What was there to like about the 2nd generation? To me it always looked like "Let's take a semicircle, put wheels on it, and stick the engine in the front. Yeah"
It's like the Ford Taurus in the 90s was nothing but ovals, the Beetle was nothing but semicircles (and equally ugly in my mind)

If I were super mega rich I would be the guy to commission a coach-builder/fabricator to make a newish beetle from a current 911. Until then I will be looking at used 911s.

A little bit, but if you'd only ever seen one in your life, you'd probably be like "wow, that's interesting and cool looking."
Part of it is that the original bug looks more like a semicircle than any car ever made up to that point. The 2nd gen just took everything to the extreme.
Unfortunately we see them constantly and often they're driven by really obnoxious people.
But the first time i saw it, i did think it was cool looking.

Who needs a coach builder? TIG welder and a sawzall will get it done just as well*
*might not actually be just as well
